The Sé or Cathedral of Porto is situated on a large square (Terreiro da Sé). It was built in the Romanesque style as a church and fortress in the 12th and 13th centuries, after which it underwent many modifications. The cathedral overlooks the old town of Porto.

The Pillory of the Cathedral of Porto was built following the demolition of the surrounding buildings to the Cathedral, House of the Cabid and Episcopal Palace, carried out by the national policy implemented by the Estado Novo. The works were completed in 1940, with the new paved terreiro. The pillory we see today is a reconstruction of an engraving of 1797 and was inaugurated in 1945.
The current Cathedral of Porto underwent construction around 1110 under the patronage of Bishop Hugo and was completed in the 13th century, but there is evidence that the city has been a bishopric seat since the Suevi domination in the 5th-6th centuries.
