Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia 1883 - ? |
|
First look - Sagrada Familia |
|
Designed originally as a standard Gothic church, work began in 1882, but
the original architect resigned one year later, and Gaudi took over. He
contintued working on it until his death in 1926 when it was barely one
quarter completed. Through many private donations work continued through
the years so that it was about half finished by 2010, when it was
consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI who declared it a minor basilica. The
continuing construction will still be privately funded (including income
from tourists) until the expected completion date of building and
decorations in the 2030s. |
