Approaching the Pena Palace in the Sintra hills by air. It is a Romanticist castle built in 1836 AD in Sintra, Portugal.
Pena Palace became a National Monument and museum in 1910.
Pena Palace in Sintra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
In the Middle Ages a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pena was built on the top of the hill above Sintra.
In 1838, King Ferdinand II, acquired the remains of the monastery, all of the surrounding lands, and the nearby Castle of the Moors, and engaged Lieutenant-General and mining engineer Baron Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege to build a Romantic style palace.
Pena Palace soon became a top tourist attraction in the 20th century - and still is.
In the 18th century a monastery in this location was severely damaged by lightning, and reduced to ruins  by the Lisbon earthquake of 1755.
