The courtyard of the University of Evora, Portugal
The University of Évora (Universidade de Évora) is a public university in Évora, Portugal. It is the second oldest university in the country, established in 1559 by then Cardinal Henry, and receiving University status in April of the same year from Pope Paul IV. The main subjects taught were Philosophy, Morals, Scripture, Speculative Theology, Rhetoric, Grammar and Humanities, which fully inserts this University into the traditional counter-reformist framework of European Catholic institutions of higher education, much of which was controlled by the Jesuits.
