Germany - approaching the Kiel Canal from the North Sea |
Twin locks at the North Sea (western) end of the Kiel Canal at Brunsbuttel, Germany; we are entering the left one, while the right lock is being used for traffic leaving the canal for the North Sea. The 98 km long canal saves about 460 km compared to the journey round the north of Denmark. |
Several smaller craft enter the same lock (on the left) as our cruise ship, all waiting for the lock to open |
There are cross-canal ferries at many points along the way |
A small marina on the north side of the canal near the western locks |
Several bridges cross the canal along its 98 km length |
An old windmill stands out in a farm on the north side of the canal |
Another cross-canal ferry is about to get underway |
Although there is flat land on both sides of the canal there are many attractive views |
We are entertained by a German brass band (beyond the far end of the pool) who stay on board for the full length of the canal |

There is a cycle path alongside most of the length of the canal |

Reaching the eastern Kiel-Holtenau locks on the northern edge of the city of Kiel, Germany. It looks as though both twin locks are being used here for exit from the canal to the Baltic Sea. |
We are held up at the locks long enough to see the sunset |
