The architecture of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral is in the Gothic Revival / Early English style. The bell used in the tower is the Murphy Bell of 1867 surrounded by thirteen other bells installed in 1996. 7 of these bells date from 1881 and were previously in St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. |
This statue of Mary MacKillop is on the lawns of the west side of the cathedral. |
Blessed Mary MacKillop was an Australian Roman Catholic nun who, together with Fr. Julian Tenison Woods, founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. |
In September 1871, Adelaide Bishop Sheil excommunicated MacKillop for alleged insubordination and attempted to disband the sisters. After five months, regretting his previous action, Sheil removed the sentence. |
