A golden diorama depicting the Jain concept of the ancient world, with 13 continents and oceans, the intricate golden city of Ayodhya, flying peacock and elephant gondolas, and gilded elephants. |
The temple itself, dedicated to Rishabha or Adinatha in 1865, was constructed of red sandstone in a matter of a few years, but it took twenty-five years, from 1870 to 1895, for many Jaipur artisans to make the thousands of individual parts required to assemble the 2 storey high three-dimensional replica of the story of Rishabha in accordance with an old manuscript by Acharya Jinasena. The original idea is thought to have been for a model to be created for educational purposes. |
