The Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, central Morocco |
||
Aït Ben Haddou is
an ancient fortified village along the former caravan route
between the Sahara and Marrakesh.
People now live in more modern dwellings in the village on the
other side of the Ounila river. Inside the walls of the ksar are half a
dozen merchants houses and other individual dwellings, and is a great
example of Moroccan
earthen clay architecture. Aït Benhaddou has been a UNESCO World
Heritage Site since 1987.
It
is located in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains, a natural gateway to
the desert, 30 km north-west of the Moroccan town of Ouarzazate.
