The volcano Mt. Tarawera in the background blew its side off in 1886 covering the surrounding area in lava and ash. The hole in the side of the volcano can be seen more clearly in the closer views below.




Many houses were lost in the 1886 eruption;
this is a preserved house that was half buried.
