Outside Views of the Catholic Cathedral - Adelaide

The architecture of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral is in the Gothic Revival / Early English style.
The bell used in the tower is the Murphy Bell of 1867 surrounded by thirteen other bells installed in 1996.
7 of these bells date from 1881 and were previously in St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney.

This statue of Mary MacKillop is on the lawns of the west side of the cathedral.

Blessed Mary MacKillop was an Australian Roman Catholic nun who, together with Fr. Julian Tenison Woods,
founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart.

In September 1871, Adelaide Bishop Sheil excommunicated MacKillop for alleged insubordination
and attempted to disband the sisters. After five months, regretting his previous action, Sheil removed the sentence.
