The landscape around the present Pagan on the Irrawaddy contains
the ruins of hundreds of pagodas and temples mostly built around 1000 years ago
 
The Irrawaddy River can be seen in the background - and below


 

Most of the old Pagodas have crumbled or disappeared, but substantial remnants of just a few remain
