Deception Island is in the southern outreaches of the South Shetland Islands off the Antarctic Peninsula. Because of its shape it has one of the safest harbours in Antarctica.
The island is the caldera of an active volcano (which caused serious damage to the local scientific stations in 1967 and 1969) - a covering of ash is evident over much of the island.
Deception Island was a whaling station, and is now a scientific outpost of Argentina and Spain as well as a tourist destination.
